Brian Purves set the tone last weekend in Burnaby, and his students made a point of following suit.
A sensei at the Westwood Karate dojo in Port Coquitlam, Purves notched three top distinctions at last week's Karate BC 2011/2012 provincial championships at BCIT.
Purves took gold in the men's 84kilogram black belt division in kumite, gold in the open weight category in kumite and was named the grand champion.
Derek Stahr won bronze in the intermediate 10/11 bracket in kata and kumite, while Jacob Mand took home gold in the advanced black division in kata and kumite.
Danica Novinc claimed gold in kata, with Julia Higgen taking bronze in kata and kumite in the girls 10/11 novice division.
Isaac Mand won bronze in kumite in the elite black category in the 52-kg weight class for the boys 14/15 age group.
Josh Biggin rounded out the medal haul with a bronze medal in kumite in the 57-kg elite advanced black division
